The 2026 Discount Trade: A Reset in CEFs and BDCs

Article

At the February 2026 CFA Philadelphia chapter talk, hosted by Aberdeen, John Cole Scott outlined what he calls the emerging "Discount Trade” across CEFs and BDCs. After two years of higher rates and 2025's discount widening, the listed income universe has reset into a structurally discounted market with elevated cash flows. Many sectors now offer high single-digit to low double-digit yields while trading below historical valuation norms. The opportunity is not simply yield, but the ability to purchase income streams at a discount. Total return potential may come from NAV performance, distribution income, and discount narrowing.Structure matters, as exchange-traded pricing creates volatility that disciplined investors can analyze. The discussion emphasized sustainability metrics over headline yield, including coverage and leverage spreads. BDCs were examined through the lens of fundamentals such as non-accruals and return on equity stability.Market volatility, in several cases, has exceeded observable credit deterioration. The takeaway: in a discounted, cash-flow-focused environment, structure and valuation alignment may create incremental opportunities for patient capital.
